Bulldozing Mpape |
|
Army Checkmating Protesters |
Located a stone throw from the exquisite Maitama lies Mpape, a settlement which hitherto provided for the needs of many people but will henceforth be designed to cater for the greed of only a few elites. In justifying the demolition exercise "the government cites 'health and Safety' as its motive but as the Centre for Democracy and Development CDD rightly observes, "this is clearly a 'land-grab' to support Abuja's luxury housing market." The Centre for Democracy and Development based in Abuja, Nigeria visited the village of Mpape on August 8th to interview residents who had learned their homes were set to be demolished on August 31st.
On August 16th, the CDD learned that the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) had surprised the residents by starting the demolition two weeks early and in the late morning while everyone was away at work. This video contains some of the few shots which escaped the village. www.cddwestafrica.org

Court Order |
The government's action was against a court order that sought a stay of execution of the proposed demolition exercise.
